Have a safe and fun summer! We bid a fond farewell to Mrs Binder and Mrs Shapiro and offer them best wishes on their retirement. Also goodbye to Mrs. Friedlander.

The Business Teachers Association of New York has created an Honor Society to recognize and reward high achievement in the area of Business Education.
Applications will be available in February through DECA or Miss Glazer & Mrs. Scheuerer.

Business classes offer the key to success!

We would like to keep you updated on some of the Business classes activities, on-going projects and special events as the year progresses. Here are some of the announcements by class:
A-F G-L M-R S-Z

Accounting
Teacher: Mrs. Scheuerer
  • Reminder: Bring calculators daily!
  • We are learning how to keep the accounting records for a small business.
  • Upcoming topics:

BCA-Business Computer Applications
Teacher: Mr. Golden

Students will work with specific applications of computer technology to satisfy a variety of business needs. The software applications will include Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint presentation software, and internet navigation and research.

Business Law
Teacher: Miss Glazer

  • We will cover the nature of law and the sources of law.
  • We will review Tort, Civil and Contract Law.
  • In the last half of the year, we will cover chapters on Warranties, Buying & Insuring a Car as well as Planning for the Future (Marriage, Renting a place to live and Buying a home).

Business Ownership and Marketing
Teachers: Mr. Golden & Mr. Mekeel

Students will learn how to start a business through topics like entrepreneurship, as well as the importance of product, place and promotion through selling and advertising.

Students will use the marketing skills learned in the first half of the year and apply them to the Travel, Hospitality & Fashion industries.

College Accounting

Teacher: Mrs. Scheuerer
  • Earn 6 college credits through CW Post SCALE program.
  • Get your College Accounting requirement completed while still in High School.
  • Reminder: Bring calculators daily!
Cooperative Work Experience
Teachers: Mr. Lawler and Mrs. Scheuerer
  • Earn high school credit while earning a paycheck.
  • Each Monday is "Contact Day". See your co-ordinator every Monday for updates on job and hour status.
  • Monthly work calendars are available in the Green and White shop.
  • Open to juniors and seniors.
  • Jobs must be "On the Books"!
  • Enhances your transcript.
  • If you are interested, please see Mrs. Scheuerer or Mr. Lawler in the co-op office (in the Green and White shop) during periods 4, 6 or 7.


Green and White Shop
Teachers: Mr. Golden & Mr. Mekeel
  • The store is open during periods 4 and 6. We sell school supplies, snacks and non-carbonated beverages.
  • Students earn a credit for working in the school store where they learn how to work the register, make change, practice good customer service, prepare orders, market products, track inventory and keep financial records.
Information Technology

Teacher: Ms. Campbell
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) features will be covered in depth.
  • Last year 26 students passed the MOUS (Microsoft Office Specialist) Exams in Word and Excel.

  • Microsoft Access will also be covered.
  • Students develop written communication with improved spelling, punctuation and proofreading skills.

Internship

  • An internship is a great way to see if you would like working in a particular field. Students are placed in an unpaid position in the field of their choice for either 100 or 200 hours, for which they receive academic credit.
  • This year we have student interns placed with lawyers, architects, veterinarians, teachers, chefs, accountants, and in hospitals, hotels, restaurants and schools.
Introduction to Occupations
Teacher: Mr. Mekeel
  • Students will use the computer to generate information on careers regarding qualifications, training, salary and professional career paths.
  • Students will prepare federal and state income tax returns 1040EZ and IT200 as a special project.
  • Each student will write at least 1 career report and design a career search guide including interview skills, conduct, job applications and resumes.
  • Students will learn about personal finance, including credit cards, insurance, investments and loans.
  • Students will complete a checking account project from Fleet Bank.
Keyboarding & ESL Keyboarding

  • Students will have their keyboarding/word processing skills reinforced for better accuracy and more productivity.
  • Students will learn proper formatting of letters, reports, tables, memos and resumes.
  • Speed drills will be encouraged and some students may achieve speeds at 70-80 wpm with less than 3 errors. This demonstrates the end-goals of achievement and self-motivation...the rewards that can be fulfilled.

Leadership

  • Students develop leadership skills including public speaking, writing, parliamentary procedure, social skills, creative thinking and debating skills.
  • Students learn leadership theory, prepare a leader powerpoint presentation, and create a leadership performance project.

Multimedia
Teacher: Ms. Campbell
  • We will cover units on Microsoft Publisher, PowerPoint and FrontPage.
  • We will create several types of flyers, brochures and presentations with transition effects, sound effects and animations.
Sports and Entertainment Marketing

Teacher: Mr. Golden
  • Students create a sports franchise to manage and operate.
  • Students will master the 4P's of Marketing through demographic research and group projects.
  • MSG (Madison Square Garden) Field trip may be scheduled in April.

Street Law
Teacher: Miss Glazer, Ms. Campbell
  • Field trips to the Suffolk County Jail will be held.
  • Guest Speakers:
    • Rikers Island Correctional Facility
    • Mormino, Queens DA office, Organized Crime Division

Web Design Class
Teacher: Ms. Campbell

  • Students learn the history of the Internet, how the Internet works and some Internet vocabulary.
  • The design aspects of an effective web site were reviewed. What makes a web site good or bad?
  • Students learn the HTML language and what are tags and attributes.
  • The user interface of FrontPage will be mastered. Several web page projects will be completed.
  • Macromedia's FLASH will be used to create animations on text and graphics.


In addition, the Business department sponsors the DECA club. Following are some of the DECA activities and announcements:
