HOWITT HAPPENINGS
On Friday, April 24, 2009, 8th grade students at Howitt Middle School held their first annual Dance Marathon benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Ms. Walsh and Mrs. Castellane’s one hundred eleven English and social studies students collaborated on a year-long project which aimed to bridge the gap between school, home, and the community. The goal of the Dance Marathon project was to collaborate as a team to challenge students to work with their classmates to support a charitable cause.

On Tuesday, March 24, 2009, representatives from the Canine Companions for Independence visited Howitt Middle School to demonstrate the various talents of their extraordinary dogs. The Future Corps Club held a special meeting in which they learned about this amazing association. The club members then presented a generous donation to help this worthy organization.
On October 23, 2008, thirty 8th grade Spanish students from Señora Moy and Señora Caracappa’s classes ......enjoyed a fabulous afternoon at the À la Carte Cooking School.

VIDEOCONFERENCING AT HOWITT!
Some of Howitt's Horizons students from Ms. Calabro's class, participated in a videoconference on October 14. A chemical engineer from Eli Lilly and Company demonstrated a variety of classic physical chanages and chemical reactions. The students were able to address questions to the scientist at the end of the program. The show was fascinating and the students were completely engaged and best of all, it was free!
Mrs. Greene's 6th grade Italian classes were treated to a program given by the Cleveland Institute of Music where they learned about opera and specifically, the composer Giacomo Puccini along with some of his most popular operas.
Howitt Middle School hosted an Internet Safety Night on October 30th to raise awareness of online dangers and crimes and provide resources for keeping families safe online. Internet Safety Night is a nationwide event that brings information and resources to students, parents and members of the community to help us all stay safer online. Howitt was joined by schools from Alaska, Tennessee and Louisiana to name a few.
In December, Mrs. Caracappa’s 7th grade Spanish class enjoyed a Videoconference with the Cleveland Museum of Art where they learned about Spanish Art. This videoconference featured paintings by artists working from or born in Spain as well as information on the cultural and historical context of the works highlighted.
Ms. D'Amelio's 8th grade English class shared a videoconference with author Barri Bumgarner. From Columbia, Missouri, Ms. Bumgarner inspires young writers to create stories brought about by personal experiences and real life issues. This is a two part videoconference which culminated in February when the students prepared their own writing.
Ms. Pietronigro's 7th grade Health class interacted with actors from the Act Out Ensemble from Indianapolis, in a videoconference entitled, "Try to Fit In". This videoconference examined the various pressures experienced by young teens.
In May, Mr. Marzillier and Ms. Ribeiro's Wildlife Warriors Club visited the Madagascar Exhibit at the Bronx Zoo and observed lemurs, fossas, and a ring tailed mongoose and made decisions on how best to protect them and their native habitats.
