Farmingdale High School Teacher Wins Award for Inspiring Students to Pursue Higher Education
The Farmingdale School District announced today that Farmingdale High School Business teacher Jonas Viik was recently awarded the Harold W. Pote “Behind Every Graduate” Award by the LeBow College of Business at Drexel University. The annual award recognizes outstanding high school teachers from throughout the country who have inspired Drexel University students to pursue a college education. Mr. Viik was nominated by Drexel University Master of Business Administration candidate and Farmingdale School District alumna and 2013 Salutatorian Sara Golshahr.
“The District is proud of Mr. Viik for receiving this prestigious award, and we are excited to recognize the impact he has had on our students’ successes for many years,” said Farmingdale Superintendent of Schools John Lorentz. “This award is emblematic of the quality of education the District provides Farmingdale students, and we are honored he has chosen Farmingdale as his teaching home.”
Jonas Viik is in his eighth year as a business educator at Farmingdale High School. He teaches a wide range of courses, including personal finance, web design, video game design and Microsoft office proficiency. He also advises the DECA and DigiTech Clubs, during which he enables students to pursue their passions and achieve their full potentials. Students under Mr. Viik’s tutelage have competed in local, state and national competitions in a variety of technical and business fields. He also helps organize the Farmingdale Community Networking event, which connects high school students with local professionals and mentors who can give insight into students’ prospective career choices.
“It takes a special person to completely redirect your perspective on the world,” said Sara Golshahr, Drexel University Master of Business Administration candidate and Farmingdale School District alumna. “Mr. Viik taught me to question the ‘why’ behind things and search for answers. With Mr. Viik’s help, in two years I went from a girl who knew nothing about business to a national DECA qualifier. Mr. Viik doesn’t just go through the motions of being a teacher, but works to impact the students he has. He is a role model, a support system, and one of the best people I have ever met.”
