Home and Career Skills students in Ms. Linda Ciccone’s 7th grade class at Howitt Middle School are learning how to sew by hand—and their latest lesson was a twist on how this age-old skill can be applied to various careers.
Ms. Ciccone invited a surgeon—the father of one of her students—into her classroom to teach her students how to suture. Using a banana, Dr. Zimmerman explained needle techniques and knot placement.
“We were so thankful to have Dr. Zimmerman demonstrate three types of sutures that can be used for patients,” said Ms. Ciccone. “Students definitely looked at sewing very differently after the demonstrations and had lots of questions! It challenged them to think differently.”
