Middle School Band Students Attend Leadership Workshop
Ron Sutherland, a retired music teacher from upstate NY, recently presented a leadership workshop for grade six band students at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School. He used storytelling and various activities to encourage the children to be more aware of other people's feelings, and help them understand that little things they do can make a big difference in the lives of others. Students used charade-like games to express their feelings and discussed ways to work together as a team.
Mr. Sutherland retired from the Clarence Central School District in 1996 after twenty-five years of teaching instrumental music and conducting the wind ensemble. He is a past president of NYSSMA and a NYSSMA adjudicator. Mr. Sutherland has worked with the Farmingdale School District for many years, teaching master classes and presenting various workshops, but this was his first time presenting a workshop to the students.
