On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the Farmingdale School District and the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation held a dedication ceremony at the Howitt Middle School Athletic Complex to unveil a new 24-hour outdoor SAVE Station. The station houses a temperature-controlled automated external defibrillator (AED) on the exterior of Howitt Middle School, ensuring immediate protection in cardiac emergencies for students, staff, and community members.

Funded through a grant from the foundation and the SAVE Station corporation, the unit extends lifesaving access beyond standard school hours for athletic events and local programs. The Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation was created following the tragic death of 14-year-old Louis Acompora from sudden cardiac arrest during a high school lacrosse game in 2000, driving its ongoing mission to place accessible AEDs in public spaces.

“Karen, your tireless work with the foundation has saved countless lives, turning profound personal tragedy into a lasting shield for so many families,” said Director of Athletics Don Herr. “On behalf of the entire district, we express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering dedication.’

“Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time,” said Foundation President Karen Acompora. “By placing these lifesaving devices in accessible outdoor public spaces and empowering the public to use them, we can save more lives.”

Distinguished guests attending the event included Superintendent of Schools Paul Defendini, Assistant Superintendent for Administration Dr. Sam Thompson, Board of Education President Suzanne D’Amico, Board of Education Vice President George Andriopoulos, Board of Education Trustee Patrick Walsh, Howitt Middle School Principal Mike Gavalas, and Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation Vice President John Acompora.
